FC Barcelona – What went wrong last season?

2016-17 was one of the worst seasons in the last decade for Barca as they completed the season with a single trophy in Copa Del Ray.

Every football fan around the world knows that the league title and the Champions League counts the most as level of the teams and the players are actually rated by their performances in these prestigious tournaments. FC Barcelona, the team that used to dominate European football 3-4 years ago with its simplicity and perfection in passing and movements, has seen  its level of dominance gradually decreasing over the years now and reached to a nadir this season. Yes, Messi was at his scintillating best this season playing mostly as a midfielder, and even dropped back to orchestrate the game. Overall, it was a Messi show this season.

There was a time when Jose Mourinho said something after joining Manchester United – “If you look at the past 3 seasons, the best player was ‘De Gea.’ This can only happen when the team’s performances are below par and a single player is always coming to the rescue. This has to change.”

This is exactly what has happened with Barca. Neymar and Suarez were inconsistent throughout the season. Jordi Alba was having the worst time of his career. Iniesta,Rakitic and Busquets were absent on big occasions except for the last Classico at Bernabeu. Mathieu was pathetic, Gomez was still lacking confidence and Rafinha was mostly injured. Sergi Roberto is a natural right back who hardly creates chances or deliver crosses. Moreover, he was less physical and inconsistent. Paco Alcacer was definitely the most questionable among the new arrivals as he was very slow and lacked the game IQ. Overall the midfield and the defense was not up to the mark. At front, among the famous MSN, only M was consistent and reliable throughout the season.

As for Luis Enrique, the relentless criticism that he has faced this season is expected but not necessarily deserving. After all, it was ‘Lucho’ who oversaw Barcelona make history by winning the treble for the second time.
